Logging, Forestry – Canada’s Most Dangerous Industry
The logging and forestry sector is widely recognized as the most hazardous industry in Canada. Workers face daily exposure to falling trees, heavy machinery, unpredictable weather, and remote worksites far from immediate medical support. Compared to other sectors, even a small number of injuries or fatalities represents a disproportionately high risk due to the relatively small workforce size.
National data from workers’ compensation boards shows that the injury rate in logging is among the highest of any Canadian industry, with traumatic injuries, equipment incidents, and struck-by hazards dominating claim reports. Chainsaws, skidders, and loaders remain the leading sources of accidents, often compounded by fatigue and lack of adequate protective equipment.
Because of these risks, safety training in forestry must go far beyond compliance—it is essential for survival. Comprehensive instruction in equipment handling, protective gear use, emergency response, and hazard recognition can drastically reduce incidents and create safer worksites, especially for small operators and contract workers.
Below is a list of the most common jobs in logging and forestry, along with the safety training courses most relevant to each role.
